One of the most common dental problem which is widely recgonized by almost anyone is improperly placed teeth. Even though it is possible that individuals who do not have well aligned teeth, still look attractive and pretty, a good set of well aligned and propotioned teeth goes a long way in establishing beauty. The basis of a good smile is a properly aligned set of teeth.

Improperly aigned or positioned teeth are treated by an "Orthodontist" who is a specilist in dentistry who handles and treats malpositioned teeth. Conventionally teeth are moved and shifted from their incorrect positions into appropriate and balanced positions with the help of braces - which are a combination of specially designed hooks which are attached to the tooth surface and a wire which slowly moves teeth into the right place with either a push or a pull motion.

As the child grows between the ages of 6 to 12 the primary teeth fall of and the permanent teeth erupt in their place. There is a phase from the ages of approximately 6 to 9 which is known as the "Ugly Duckling" phase when large permanent teeth erupt and sit in a jaw which is not yet fully grown. This makes the appearence imbalanced. On the other hand if there is an issue and the teeth are getting into a final malaligned position a dentist will be able to recognize and differentiate this from the "Ugly Duckling" stage. The ages of 12 to 14 is usually the best age to start getting the teeth straightened out. Is is possible to also direct jaw growth in the right direction with intervention at ages of as young as 8-10 years also.

Teeth movement is done with a set of brackets and wires. These brackets can be metallic or can be optionally ceramic and more closer to the tooth color. These are usually placed on the outer side of the teeth and are visible. There is a newer technoloy which is available where the brackets are placed on the inner surface of the teeth and is known as "Lingual Orthodontics". The bracket and the wires are not then visible since they are placed on the inner side of the teeth.

Of late, there has been a new method to move teeth using what are known as "Aligners". These are custom fabricated transparent thick plastic molds which are to be worn by the patients for the maximum number of hours posssible in a day. These aligners are transparent and barely visible in the patients mouth.
