Healthy teeth is a pre-requisite for a completely healthy body. It is very important that the teeth always remain healthy. It is best to get them treated the mooment any problem is detected or suspected. Teeth can be kept healthy and maintained for a life time if proper care is taken for them. It is very important to keep the teeth healthy and also to indentify any dental disease as early as possible and take corrective action to make sure that the dentition remains healthy.
The key mantra for dental health is complete oral hygiene. It is very imperative that the teeth are cleaned twice a day, under any circumstances. It does not take more than 4 to 5 mintues to clean the teeth. This 10 minutes a day will definitely avoid a huge amount of dental disease. This cleaning should be carried out with a brush and a paste. A tooth brush along with a tooth paste is the best proven way of cleaning teeth. Dental decay as well as gum disease both originate due to the acumulation of a substance called "Plaque" which if undisturbed, will calcify in a few days and form "Calculus". This plaque is a film of bacteria and its byproducts that is continuously forming on the tooth surface. The objective of cleaning the teeth with a toothbrush is the removal of this coating of plaque from the teeth. Plaque tends to accumumate in a matter of 12 to 14 hours, hence the recommendation of cleaning the teeth twice a day. This plaque along with any kind of carbohydrate source (any kind of sticky food in the form of a liquid or a solid) will create an acid attack and demineralize the enamel and initiate dental decay. Plaque and calculus can also damage the gums surrounding the tooth and get into the supporting structures of the tooth leading to gum disesase. The correct way of brushing teeth twice a day will ensure removal of this plaque and prevention of dental disease. Daily cleaning with a brush and paste can be reinforced by the use of a mouth wash which will reduce the amount of plaque build up without causing any harmfull effect. The choice of an appropriate mouthwash should be left to your dentist. It is also advisable to get at least a yearly check up with the dentist. Many times, in spite of a two day brushing regimen and a mouthwash, certain areas of the oral cavity may not be so well cleaned due to difficulty in reaching them. During the annual maintainance schedule, the dentist can carry out a scaling (tooth cleaning) procedure in which any plaque that has hardened and converted into calculus can be easily removed. |
